House Democrats pass the DREAM Act

After a spirited debate by both parties the contentious DREAM Act legislation passed in the House of Representatives by a vote of 216-198.

While the DREAM Act (Development, Relief and Education of Alien Minors) legislation may have admirable intentions in a time of severe economic duress, American children are the ones falling behind and losing their opportunities for higher education.

Arguments from GOP critics pointed to perpetrated fraud, chain amnesty and costs to the taxpayer as reasons to not pass the DREAM Act.

Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX) said, “The DREAM Act would put the interest of the illegal immigrant above a U.S. citizen.”

On the other hand Democrats contend the GOP’s cries of amnesty are unfounded as the children of lawbreaking adults should not be punished for their parent’s actions.

No amendments were allowed to the current DREAM Act legislation and lawmakers were given only a few hours to read and prepare for the vote on the House floor.

The Senate will vote on the DREAM Act tomorrow morning.
