GOP budget hawks look to lasso the cowboy poet’s festival

Cry me a river senate majority leader Harry Reid (D-NV) is calling the Republicans mean for wanting to cut the cowboy poetry festival in his home state of Nevada.

“The mean-spirited bill, H.R. 1, eliminates National Public Broadcasting,” says Senate leader Reid. “It (H.R.1) eliminates the National Endowment of the Humanities and National Endowment of the Arts.”

Reid continued to say that “these programs create jobs. The National Endowment of the Humanities is the reason we have in northern Nevada every January a cowboy poetry festival. Had that program not been around, the tens of thousands of people who come there every year would not exist.”

During the passionate senate floor speech Reid wasn’t joking.

The festival is held in Elko, Nevada and according the Democrat leader, attracts thousands of people every year. The next National Cowboy Poetry Gathering is planned for January 28, 2012.

The wild west National Cowboy Poetry festival is a week-long celebration of cowboy life in the west, featuring contemporary and traditional arts that arise from lives caring for land and livestock and features a plethora of western music.
