Supreme Court rules in Arizona’s favor – E-Verify to be implemented statewide

The state of Arizona finally caught a break; the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the state’s ability to require employers to use the federal E-Verify program. The decision also allows the state to revoke business licenses of companies that knowingly hire illegal workers.

The E-Verify program is a successful federal program that uses Social Security card numbers to ensure prospective employees are able to legally work inside the United States. Proponents of E-Verify would like to see this program used by all businesses in the country and say it would curtail illegal aliens from crossing the porous southern borders because they would no longer be able to get a job.

“Today’s Supreme Court decision that upholds a state’s right to revoke business licenses of companies that knowingly hire illegal workers is a giant leap in the right direction for meaningful immigration reform,” said Congressman Brian Bilbray (R-CA), Chairman of the bi-partisan House Immigration Reform Caucus. “Congress must take the next step and enact laws that end our implicit encouragement of illegal immigration and address its cause: employers who exploit illegal labor.”

When it comes to moving forward and dealing with the large illegal alien population currently residing in the country, lawmakers say turning off the ability for illegals to get a job needs to be at the top of the “honey do” list.

“Implementing the E-Verify system is something Democrats and Republicans must work closely together on to achieve. It is imperative that we end an employer’s ability to hire an illegal worker and that we eliminate any notion of amnesty so that illegal immigrants are without two major incentives for breaking our laws,” Bilbray said.
